Cockermouth is a delightful market town, situated at the north western corner of the English Lake District and one of Englands 51 ‘Gem Towns’.
Dating from Norman times, the town developed around the confluence of two rivers - the Derwent and Cocker. The older parts of the town are centred around a broad medieval Main Street off which there are lovely cobbled courtyards including Kirkgate, featuring striking Georgian architecture.
The town has a rich culture including museums, galleries, the Kirkgate Centre, Jennings Brewery tours and Wordsworth House, the world famous birthplace of William Wordsworth.
The busy shopping thoroughfares feature Sainsbury’s supermarket, high street chains and a wide variety of specialist local retailers. There are many local restaurants, cafes and bars, combined with the nearby sports centre, swimming pool and golf club to provide social and recreational opportunities to suit most tastes.
