Whitehaven is a fine Georgian town, one of the first post-renaissance planned towns in the country.
Built on traditional shipping and mining industries, modern day Whitehaven has developed around the regenerated harbour area which has fast become a favourite with yacht and leisure craft owners from all around the country as their 'Gateway to the Lakes'.
The town centre has a wealth of Georgian architecture and some 250 Georgian buildings. Nowadays, the busy thoroughfares include pedestrianised shopping streets, restaurants, bars and cafes around the town and the re-generated harbour area.
The town is host to many visits from Tall Ships and local attractions include the Maritime Festival, The Rum Story, The Beacon and the Haig Mining Museum. Whitehaven is also the starting point of the popular 140 mile C2C Cycle Route.
Whitehaven has won many awards in recent years, ranging from Heritage Awards to 'In Bloom' Awards reflecting the pride that the local community has in the town.
