Local businesses

When it comes to independent shops, you are spoilt for choice in Cockermouth. Most of the town’s local businesses are in the ‘Cockermouth and District Chamber of Trade’. This organisation sets out to protect and promote the town’s local businesses.

  • Some of our favourite shops include:
  • The Linden Tree
  • Fagans
  • W. Lindsay & Sons Butchers
  • The Toy Shop
  • Strolling for Shoes
  • Lilly & Co
  • Andessa Jewellery

These are just a few of the fantastic local businesses in the town!

Things to do

Boredom is something that is hard to come by in Cockermouth. There is something for everyone to do in the town.

• Wellington Farm Café & Tearoom provides great fun for the all family with an onsite animal enclosure to enjoy after you’ve finished your ice cream with notable stunning views of the Cumbrian fells.
• Another attraction located close by the town is the Lakes Distillery. Enjoying a tour of the award-winning distillery is a fantastic way to spend the afternoon and the shop provides a perfect excuse to contribute to the local economy. If beer is more your taste then the Jennings Brewery tour will be right up your street.
• Other tourist attractions in the town include the birthplace and childhood home of world famous poet William Wordsworth. Named after the poet, ‘Wordsworth House’ provides a starring role on the Main Street of the town. The tour provides a glimpse into the past and isn’t to be missed for lovers of poetry and history.
• As with anywhere in Cumbria and Lake District, green space isn’t hard to come by. Harris Park and Memorial Gardens provide excellent wide open spaces for leisure activities. Grassmoor Sports Centre is the home of both Cockermouth Rugby Union and Cockermouth FC. There are opportunities for further exercise at Cockermouth Leisure Centre which is the home of the renowned Cockermouth Swimming Club.

• There is also a great selection of takeaway options and it would be wrong of us not to mention the provider of our annual fish and chip supper Main Street Fisheries.
• Wild Zucchinis Bistro was something that couldn’t be missed out. In addition, The Quince and Medlar vegetarian restaurant providers an individual and interesting dining experience.
