Whitehaven is a pretty harbour town on the west coast of Cumbria. Historically the town was famous for mining and shipping, but now is a prime location for nearby Sellafield and the nuclear industry. The maritime history is clear when wandering around the town. From statues, benches and artwork, the nautical themes are clear throughout the town. This theme continues when looking at things to do. The Beacon is a fantastic interactive learning experience that combines Whitehaven and Cumbria’s respective histories. The museum was refurbished in 2007 to keep up with the times however it can still send you on a journey into the past. The Beacon has a wave of new exhibitions throughout the year including Sir Tony Robinson introducing the new gladiators exhibition on Saturday September 23rd.Find out more

Whitehaven’s harbour is a great place to have a wander around and explore. With a boatload of landmarks, statues and sculptures there’s plenty to see including an old chimney from the historic Wellington Pit ‘The Candlestick’. The harbour is also the start of the famous C2C cycle route.Find out more
