Whitehaven


Whitehaven is a pretty harbour town on the west coast of Cumbria. Historically the town was famous for mining and shipping, but now is a prime location for nearby Sellafield and the nuclear industry. The maritime history is clear when wandering around the town. From statues, benches and artwork, the nautical themes are clear throughout the town. This theme continues when looking at things to do. Shop roasted coffee, Fine wines, Gins, Vintage Port and Hampers. Richardsons of Whitehaven is a favorite local shop, when it comes to a good taste in drinks or gifts.

The Beacon Museum

The Beacon is a fantastic interactive learning experience that combines Whitehaven and Cumbria’s respective histories. The museum was refurbished in 2007 to keep up with the times however it can still send you on a journey into the past. The Beacon has a wave of new exhibitions throughout the year including Sir Tony Robinson introducing the new gladiators exhibition on Saturday September 23rd.

The Rum Story

Keeping on the Maritime theme, the award winning attraction ‘The Rum Story’ takes you back to when Whitehaven was the the centre of the UK rum trade. Your journey will take you from the Caribbean rainforest right back to Whitehaven. Set in the original shop, cellars, courtyards and bonded warehouses of the Jefferson family rum business, you couldn’t be in a better place to learn about rum.

The Harbour

Whitehaven’s harbour is a great place to have a wander around and explore. With a boatload of landmarks, statues and sculptures there’s plenty to see including an old chimney from the historic Wellington Pit ‘The Candlestick’. The harbour is also the start of the famous C2C cycle route.
